2) I get to watch families grow

I took this picture about a month ago with my cell phone. I was on a run on a gorgeous spring day and this was my view on my run so I snapped a pic!

Last week, I let the girls wear a couple dresses from when I was a little girl. They called them "Princess Dresses" because you see, they think mama is SO OLD that these dresses MUST be from ancient times and what real princesses wore :)

They had so much run running around in the dresses they refused to take them off.

(side note: NorCal is experiencing a crazy wet spring, so any and all photoshoot keep getting pushed back. But stay tuned!)

This week, I must send a special thank you to a dear, talented friend of mine Lisa.

Lisa is an amazing artist, and calligrapher. Yes, all that type is actually her own hand! She does beautiful sketches and calligraphy for weddings and similar things. She has even been featured in a wedding magazine which is pretty impressive to me. I have been so happy to see what a success her work has been and have enjoyed watching her business grow. Her art is so simple, elegant, and clean.

Lisa was so kind to make me a couple watermarks! I love them, they are so simple and clean so they don't take over the picture. Yet, they are so pretty, elegant and a nice complement to the work. :)

So, thank you Lisa!

While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about.

My favorite quote, I have used it a million times because its so true. My job as their mommy is to teach them about life, prepare them to go out into the big world and create their own lives and do big things. Yet, they have taught me what a beautiful and fascinating world we truly live in. To stop and smell the roses, if you will.

If you have ever seen a 3 year old stare in wonderment at a flower beginning to bloom, or a lady bug crawling on a leaf, asking a million questions, you know what I am talking about.

This was so sweet, I couldn't help but post. This morning, my kids were up way too early. As usual.

DD#1 opened up the shades and wrote "Mom" and then proceeded to draw said Mom in the morning dew of the window.

So cute!

Who needs mothers day when you have moments like this? :)

PS: I do believe I am officially caught up on the weeks of the year! Yipeeeeeee! Here's hoping I can stay on top of it ;)

Back Yard Fun 16/52

If I were to give two pieces of advice on how to photograph kids. I would say:

1) Capture True Joy
2) Its all about the angle.

I love natural smiles. The best way to get that out of your kids to create a good time for them, make them smile and laugh those beautiful smiles that make your heart melt. I am a firm beleiver that its ok to look like an idiot jumping around like a monkey, makeing funny faces, rolling around in the grass to get a good smile out of my kids (who BTW: are NOT fans of the old Nikon!)...I figure, no one is going to know with that picture hanging up on your wall what the person behind it looked like. Nor will it capture the confused looks of passer-by's wondering whats up with the chick standing on her head to get that kid to smile :)

Angle. With kids, take a picture at direct eye level. Don't take it at your POV. Which means you spend a lot of time on the ground...or go for totally off, meaning directly above their head, or way below their eye level. This creates a different shot, and also, per above, kids get a kick out of it if you are doing something funny like holding the camera over their head or are laying on the ground taking a picture up. In addition, frame is important too! I am a HUGE fan of off center shots, this allows you to tell a bit of a story of the picture rather than just the subject.

These two pictures (which both count for my week 16 submission), were taken this afternoon just laying in the backyard enjoying a beautiful spring afternoon!

This week, I am fully aware is a weird post, but I just thought it was so trippy that I had to capture it and share.

Today, painting easter eggs with my little ones, the girls and I would gather round that cup and drip the dye in and watch as it slowly moved in the water. Its so beautiful!

I decided to try and capture it on camera and make this one of my 52 week photos. What do you think? Pretty trippy huh?

This morning, I decided to do something a little different from our normal morning craziness running around rushing to our final destinations.

I got the kids in the car, got them their favorite treat of kids steamers from the local coffee spot. We drove over to a place I run down the street, and watched the sun rise.

The kids enjoyed watching the sky get brighter, gorgeous shades of pink, orange and yellow, looking to spot birds in the sky...with the grand finale of the bright light in the sky peak over the horizon.

It was pretty special for me. I hope it was for them as well.

Speaking of which, you don't actually realize how long it takes to watch a flower bloom until you are waiting for a flower to bloom, its kind of like watching the pot boil, although I am sure that a pot would boil faster than this flower bloomed. This one took approx 45 minutes!

Some thoughts on Parenthood this 10th week of 2011:

Words cannot even begin to describe parent-hood. Its the most marvelous difficult joyful challenging hearwarming frustrating life changing experience of your life.

As a parent, you will be pee'd, puked, spit, and other unmentionables on you. But for some reason, since its your own kid, its not as gross.

No amount of advice will prepare you for it, they don't come with instruction manuals, yet, once they are here, it all just kind of falls into place.

They keep you young, yet age you like crazy all at the same time.

They will provide for you free of charge, memories that you will hold tight in your mind and heart for the rest of your life.

At some point, they will want you to read them the Same book. Every.Single.Day. for a few months at some point, but every time will be totally into it like they have never heard the story before, even though you are reciting it from memory.

No, you will not sleep the first year. But eventually you forget what real sleep feels like and move on with life. ;)

They will humble you.

Some of the things that come out of a toddlers mouth, the best paid writers couldn't come close as funny if they tried.

They will grow up way to fast for comfort, and you will look back on these times. Laugh at the difficult times, and smile at the great times.

There is no such thing as too many pictures. :)

I am VERY fortunate, that some of my best friends have kids the same age as my kids. These girls have "known" each other since birth. I have known their mommy's since before they were even thought of. I watched them kick in their mommy's tummy, and had the pleasure of watching them grow from teenie tiny newborns to now full blown kids.

I love this picture. Their little personalities just shine in this shot. From left to Right.
My DD, this little girlish tomboy, she is such a goofball.
Then Ms. L, just the sweetest thing, and wise beyond her years, she has been blowing us away with her intellect from a very young age.
Little Ms. N, this little cutie with her scrunchie smile, she always says the funniest things and has the BEST facial expressions, and is such a little thing too.
Then Ms. O, total glamor girl without even trying (not that 4 year olds 'try', but you get it).

I have taken three sessions of this little guy 6-9 and now 12 months, its been great to watch him grow. When I first met him he was just starting to crawl, then at 9 months he was standing and then his 1 year session he was running around like crazy, all the while his little personality making everyone he see's just smile.

I am so happy to have been able to take part in documenting his first year. For his 1 year session we did a cake smash! What fun! He was a little unsure that, yes, we were actually allowing him to make a mess! LOL!

It was great to watch, and the pictures came out awesome! (if I do say so myself)

Its like the birthday of the century! My oldest DD will be 4 in a little more than 2 weeks and it is all she can talk about.Since the day after her 3rd birthday party she has been planning her 4th and its ALMOST HERE! EEK!

I can't beleive she will be 4. Crazy. She is still my little baby in my mind, always will be but she is growing up far to fast for my comfort.

First Picnic 5/52

We have had just PERFECT weather lately. A little taste of summer in the middle of winter. We had our first of what will be many back yard picnics of 2011 this past weekend. Just a quick snack of bananas and apples.

The girls were laying in the sun, enjoying their treats, and I just had to snap a shot. Of course, DD#2 dressed herself (hence the backwards and inside out) and DD#1 is mid chew, but they call it Candid for a reason right? :)

Yes, I am behind, so we will get two this weekend! We have been fighting illness and just general life-crazyness.

This week I turned 29. Which, I am totally fine with, I dont mind getting older, I have done everything I have wanted to in life so I don't feel like I am fighting the clock. Plus, life and getting older is something to appreciate! Life is good!

That being said, as we were placing the candles on the cake last night, at one point I said to myself "Wow, thats Alota candles! I am going to need a bigger cake soon!"

BTW: The Cake is Chocolate Rasberry Mouse Cake from Olivers....Worth.Every.Calorie.

SO here is to the last year of my 20's, I look forward to all life has to bring.

The Bridge. 3/52

I really like this weeks shot. I actually took this with my point and shoot camera through the windsheild of my car!

We had PERFECT weather in California this weekend. So my family decided to play tourist and take advantage of the great places to visit so close to home.

I love this bridge. The history of it you feel as you cross it as so many people have since it opened in 1937. The artistic detail. The color.

Its like no other bridge in the world.

Bookworm - 2/52

This weeks addition: bookworm.

Anyone that knows me knows I am a HUGE reader. HUGE. I wasn't always a big reader, but found my love for it in adulthood.

My kids LOVE books. Some nights we all crowd in my bed each with a book and sit in peace and quiet while each of us reads our books. This particular night, DD#2 was "Reading" one of the latest favorites in the house: There's a Wocket in my Pocket.

I looked over from my own book to see her engrossed in the book, the bright pictures, the imaginary world that Dr. Suess creates, and it was such a peaceful moment, I thought a perfect addition to this project.

I cannot tell you how happy it is that for now at least, my kids have a great appreciation for books and all the magic and imaginary world and stories it has to offer.

2011 52 Week Project - Biker Chick - 1/52

This year, I decided to try out a little photo project. I am sure you have seen it in one form or another. The idea is simple, one photography per week for the whole year!

I am using this challenge to force me to get out and stop and smell the roses and capture the beauty in my everyday life. These pictures won't always be award winners by any means, but they will mean something to me because they will represent a memory, a moment in time that I can capture and keep and remember forever.

This week: "Biker Chick" my older daughter got a training wheel bike for Christmas, and we took it out this afternoon for her first real outdoor ride. Once she got a hold of it, she took off like lighting. Once I got over my heart attack watching my baby go, hearing her joyful squeals on the wind as she rode around the empty parking lot is something I never want to forget. Such innocence, and joy and a perfect way to kick off the first week of 52.

One of my favorite things that photography has brought me is being able to meet new people and new families. I love watching their kids get bigger and the number of kids multiply. Its pretty neat to follow!

I was lucky enough to meet this family back in June when they were just about to welcome their second child to the world. Last week I got to meet up with them again for Christmas photos and it was so cool to see how beautiful the family is with the addition of their little girl.

And I am not kidding when I tell you I have never seen a big brother more in love with his sister. We couldn't get him to stop giving her kisses and pats on the head to get a normal picture! LOL!

It was such a pleasure, and the pictures came out fantastic! I found a beautiful local winery that is more than welcoming of photographers and the bright fall colors with the gorgeous jewel tones came out picture perfect!

Fall in the Vineyards

Vineyards in the fall is a sight to behold. The leaves turn gorgeous tones of red, yellow, and oranges. Its like a giant sunset across acres and acres of vines as we say good bye to the fall harvest and prepare for winter.

The only sad part is the vines are only these shades for a brief period of time. If you wait too long you miss out on capturing this beautiful display. Luckily, I have had a few vineyard sessions these past couple weeks. So I have been spending lots of time in the vines.

You gotta bet that its tough to photograph someone who...takes photographs.

I have a Photographer friend, Aimee at White Daisy Photography who has taught me so much about photography. Some photographers can be kinda snobby and stingy talking about photography, either they think that they are just so much better than you, or they don't want to talk about it thinking you will like, I don't know, take over the world of photography? I don't get it. What I eat don't make you fat.

I digress. Hah!

Aimee is just the sweetest thing in the world, and incredibly talented. And this year I really wanted some great family photos for my Christmas Cards, but there are two catches:

1) I have two toddlers. 'nuff said.

2) Since I take pictures, I am really picky. Like I have a vision in my head of what I want and how I want it.

Anyway, obviously I have been following Aimee for a long time and am totally impressed with her work, and openness, and we have similar styles, so I asked her to take on the VERY difficult task that is my crazy kids and my control factor.

She took it on with a big smile on her face and was actually able to get some awesome shots! So, I highly recommend Aimee! Her specialty is Weddings, and she runs out of the Foothills area (Auburn) but seriously, every thing she shoots turns into gold, in my opinion....

Trust me, it doesn't always work like this! Especially with a toddler and a baby, and trust me, that little toddler was being VERY much a toddler! LOL! But you wouldn't know it from the results, what beautiful little girls!

I love the old brick building in the background, has a real warm feel to it that just makes you think of Fall (or maybe thats just me? I don't know I grew up in Hawaii)

We had just about given up hope with the little girl until we laid the blanket down, then she was ready for her close up!

It was POURING rain on the day of their session as I am driving in the car with my windshield wipers on full blast...it didn't look good, but the universe gave us a break from the rain for an hour so we could capture this beautiful glowing mom and proud dad!

This little family of 3, very soon to be 4 were so much fun to photograph! Big brother was so hilarious and excited for his little sister on the way. He was one of the best Toddlers I have ever photographed, just so well behaved and such a good sport about the whole thing!

We did this session out at SSU on a gorgeous sunny afternoon. Mom was simply glowing and has the cutest baby belly and just gorgeous gorgeous eyes!

Have I ever told you I live in one of the most beautiful places in America? Well, I do!

And nothing reminds me of that beauty more than this time of year. Everything is blooming beautiful colors and pinks, purples, greens. And of course, we cannot forget the Mustard!

Its everywhere this time of year, gorgeous fields of gold!

We took the girls out on a little field trip in search of some mustard vineyards and we hit the jackpot! Not a cloud in the sky and mustard everywhere!

I had such a good time on this shoot, It couldn't have gone better:

I had one happy newborn and one cooperating toddler. Quite a good combination and not always easy to come by, and such a nice family too.

This sweet little 1 month old did not feel like a milk coma on this day, but rather wanted to be awake for her whole session. And big sister was my big helper and did everything I asked of her.

I love this picture...big sis was more than happy to shower little sis with tons of sweet kisses!

I love a toddler that will look at the camera! Unlike my own kids, all I get is Grimace! Both girls have gorgeous blue eyes you could swim in.

So precious.

Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a family of 4 generations. How neat is that? We met up at Luther Burbank which is just gorgeous! I can't get enough of these fall colors!

This was a fun family session in downtown Petaluma on an absolutely beautiful afternoon in downtown Petaluma.

We cruised around the historial town taking different shots at various locations and then hit the jackpot at the riverfront! The lighting was perfect, the river was glimmering, and when we were done there was an ice-cream store right there so I could indulge!

Did I ever tell you I love babies?

Its so dangerous going to take pictures of these tiny brand new little ones because it makes me miss those early days of the sleepy snuggly newborn.

You can't help but catch a little baby fever with a cute little guy like this!

This little one would not take a snooze for us, he wanted to stay up and party!

It was a gorgeous afternoon at the beautiful SSU campus last weekend.

This was a beautiful family and the kids have seriously.gorgeous.eyes.seriously.......seriously. and lashes for miles.

It was such fun meeting this family and the pictures came out great! (if I do say so myself)

This was a great family session at Luccessi Park.

Makes me excited for when my kids are older and more cooperative in taking pictures. Seriously: every.single.picture. came out perfect!.....No kids crying or trying to nurse, or running away screaming, or wiping dirt on their pretty dresses, or pouting in the corner....

(this is what happened at my *own* photo shoot with MY kids in case you were wondering)

I love babies.

This little guy was such a sweetheart and put up with our photosession so well. And the older sister was AMAZING, and I am not just say that. She did everything we asked her with love in her heart for her little Brother.

This family shoot was so much fun! This family felt so familiar to me, they remind me so much of my own family!

I had the pleasure of doing this maternity session recently. SUCH a beautiful belly, and SUCH a glowing mommy! Almost (and I said ALMOST) made me miss being pregnant!

Tis the season! I am happy to share that I have booked a bunch of Holiday family minishoots! My next few weekends are pretty much booked!

Here is a sneak peak at my most recent...we actually took this over 2 days, so it wasn't really mini. But I really wanted to make sure they got the photo they wanted.

Day One was just a little too close to nap time for the 3 year old (gosh do I know how THAT goes), so we tried again the next morning and I am SO glad we did, because they found this BEAUTIFUL vineyard on the side of the road, so we pulled up, plopped out chair down and snapped away. The scenery was so gorgeous, and the 3 year old was much happier...and we all know, happy toddler: happy family!
